Rumours aplenty doing the rounds of budget cutbacks over at Croydon. Apparently, if the rumours are to be believed, the playing budget has been halved . Hard to see how they will be able to keep their squad together if true, we were fortunate to grab a win over at their place earlier in the season and they have a couple players who would (in my opinion) grace any side in the KL.

Monsoir Freeman... wasn't he part of the Man Utd youth set-up at some point in time? Scores a few too. But I hope they aren't in as bad a state as the rumours are saying... I'd never wish that on anyone... well... except maybe Chelsea and Tonbridge... ;D

wishingwells i think its a bit harsh to say we were fortunate to get a result over there, a mid-week win away to croydon is a great result and from what i was told we controlled the second half.
will be intersting to see how many other clubs have to look at things, i see that grays in the conference have slashed their wage bill and have allowed players to leave if they want to.
even gillingham are looking at their coaching set up and might be releasing the coach that joined from charlton

I heard a very interesting radio interview with the Birmingham chairman the other day, who was saying for most clubs, the response will be delayed several months, as such a large percentage of outgoings were tied up on players wages. Aparently they are powerless to do anything much to cut back because that would mean illegally telling contracted players they would be getting a pay cut.
Grays are a prime example of a club that got bank-rolled a few years back, and are currently punching above their weight (in relation to their attendances).
Another VERY interesting case in the next year or two could be Truro City, who have been shamelessly bankrolled by a millionaire property developer... This to the point of splashing out £10,000 for a player while playing in a parallel league to ours last season.
Yes, a lot of clubs might find things hard over the next few months, but if they are competently run, they'll be OK. For those which aren't this should serve as a sharp reality check for them, and will hopefully have a long-term positive effect on the overall game.

chopper i'm guessing that grays and clubs like them will have clauses built into their contracts allowing them to cut wage bills instantly on the promise that the lost money will be paid back in 18-24 months time when times improve. Truro are very interesting as they rise through the leagues, but times are changing in terms of ambition, i belive our victors from saturday paid out a certain amount of money for the young man who got himself sent off!

Truro's case is all the more interesting because the guy's fortune is coming from property development.
If Grays do look for loopholes and go down that path, they'd better have a batch of players that are loyal enough to the club to accept any promises of cash being paid in 18-24 months time. Still VERY risky, even if they are, as there can be no guarantees once the credit crunch lifts that they will be able to instantly get the backlog of money they need to make good those promises. That could just delay the problem for them, and lead to legal headaches to boot.

Lewes are already in this position - after winning the title last season the manager was sacked and our entire squad was released, on the premise of spending less. And to be fair we were spending beyond our means for the last few years, without a doubt.
Unfortunately, due to the board not handling this well/a string of defeats/lower standard of players this has resulted in pretty dire attendances (around the 600 mark mostly) meaning less revenue. So are we any better off than this time last year? Possibly, possibly not. We need £350,000 to complete the ground works necessary to stay in the Conference and we just haven't got it or anywhere to get it from by March.

What should have been an amazing day when we were presented with the trophy was utterly ruined with all that coming out the day before. Five years Kingy was manager - he finally gets us to the Conference and is sacked the day before. Yes he probably spent too much but if the money was there to be offered then it's not his fault, it's the boards for not stepping in earlier. To come out and say 'He was never asked to get us promotion' was a real slap in the face.
I'm yet to be convinced our wage bill is any lower this season anyway, what with Danny Cullip, Michael Standing and Scott Taylor on the payroll, never mind all the loanees.
Still, the end of the season should be very interesting...

Simon - Is there any truth to the rumour that my Kingstonian-supporting coleague told me that Lewis are looking to play in the Ryman League next year?

Simon - Is there any truth to the rumour that my Kingstonian-supporting coleague told me that Lewis are looking to play in the Ryman League next year? Well, the rumours certainly doing the rounds. The board did step in and make a statement to the effect that is was untrue and they hoped we would still be in the Conference next year. I think most have taken that with a large pinch of salt given their recent history though...

Just my opinion. Was at the game and thought with the number of chances Croydon created they were unlucky not to come away with a point. Not that I'm complaining about the result.
